This looks suspiciously like a multi-level marketing scheme (scam?).

Let me guess - you make money not by selling the product but by signing up more recruiters?

Carol, would you be willing to reveal the name of the company?

Multi level marketing is not a scam... pyramid selling is and is illegal. The company I work for has a DSA award and an Investors in People award. People can an do become millionaires with hard work and determination... Alan Sugar didnt get where he is by sitting watching daytime tv did he? Oh no, he built the company Exclamation

There's a big difference between being an entrepreneur and starting your own company like Alan Sugar, and getting involved with a multi level marketing scheme where very few people make any significant money except for the people at the top.

I think you should do some further investigation before spending any money with this company.

From http://www.skeptics.org.uk/multi_level_marketing.php

Quote:
Summary of an MLM scheme:

The business model is fatally flawed.

It suckers people in with an appeal to greed.

People can be convinced of it due to wishful thinking.

It can get a grip of people due to indoctrination and self-deception.

It may result in the loss of money, credibility and self respect.

The perpetrators of the scheme will have made a profit out of you regardless. They are the ones that can't lose!

Are you under contract not to reveal the name of the company? Is this so that potential recruits can't do their own research before getting in touch with you?

It's a scam. If not, then sue me for libel. Iv'e never seen one of these ads in a job centre or staff agency. If I joined up, would I have to pay any money out?

Here is a Wikipedia article on topic of Multi-level Marketing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_marketing

Here are a couple of pertinent quote from that article (it is US centric):

"The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises that multi-level marketing organizations with greater incentives for recruitment than product sales are to be viewed skeptically. The FTC also warns that the practice of getting commissions from recruiting new members is outlawed in most states as 'pyramiding'."

"The critical question for the FTC is whether the revenues that primarily support the commissions paid to all participants are generated from purchases of goods and services that are not simply incidental to the purchase of the right to participate in a money-making venture."

So that's the test then - where is the focus? The products or the recruitment? Anyone who has had dealings with Sir Alan Sugar knows is he all about the product and little else. This is seen on The Apprentice time and time again.

Carol, if the company you're vouching for is indeed a legitimate business I'm sure you'd be happy to post details on this page.

I would be willing to do a bit of background on it, with an open mind, to assist others who were thinking of signing up.

Here is an excellent podcast episode on network marketing / MLM:

The Skeptoid postcast is strongly recommended by the way.

Not really, because there is much more pressure on signing up new distributors instead of shifting actual products, hence Carol's message on here was about recruitment rather than shifting products.

I've never seen Avon, Betterware etc. distributors madly flyposting streets with "Make money working from home" type rubbish. The dodgy type of MLM companies we're talking about here are about signing up more distributors - who usually have to buy a minimum amount of stock from which the 'parent' distributor would take a cut. If they were to get paid cash for signing up distributors (without the minimum purchase of products) then this would become an illegal pyramid scheme, but that's really the only difference.

Anyway there's no need for me to rant on about it here, there's plenty of information online.
